KNIT’S ISLAND is a documentary film entirely shot in various online video games. Through a series of portraits, the film reveals the daily lives of many players in the virtual world. The avatars testify to their experiences, their lives and their deaths as players. From the most hostile to the most friendly, these characters make us discover intimate and collective imaginaries. These players take us through (the landscapes of) their world, from the devastated countryside to the parking lot of a virtual employment centre, through their own habitats and meeting places. The film then engages in an investigation in order to understand the extent to which reality in the virtual world invites itself and then confronts a complex administrative social organization. In an absurd and burlesque escalation of action, it reveals scenes of social comedy where roles are redefined, where a simple child can become a threat. In these tireless imaginary fabrications, the film shows the virtual film crew embodied by the authors’ three avatars. The real is then invited more and more into the film through a series of interviews and takeover of the game by administrators. The authors ultimately decide to organize an event within the game, in which they propose to a multitude of players to participate in the construction of an architecture, a kind of theatre, in which they could express themselves on a stage, in front of an audience.
